We can dialogue with pro-choicers through Twitter. Here's how:
Alternative title: “Right to Life of Central California: Being nice and finding common ground… in 140 characters or less.”
While YouTube and Facebook are still dominated by liberals, conservatives have taken over Twitter. (My good friend Darryn Nyberg made the point that this may be because Twitter is text-driven, so it’s more about ideas, where conservatives win, and YouTube has more emotional videos, which liberals are better at.)
I want to show people that we can really have great dialogue with the other side through Twitter. (This can be difficult because Twitter only allows you to send messages that are 140 characters or less, but it can be done.) I’m forwarding a conversation I had just last night, showing how if we’re nice and attempt to find common ground, we can actually begin to change people’s views. (For more on common ground, please purchase Steve Wagner's excellent book, "Common Ground Without Compromise." Now you’ll rarely see someone change their views in front of you; people are too prideful for that. Our goal should be to put an intellectual “pebble in their shoe” that they’ll have to hobble around on for a while, because they couldn’t answer our argument. That is precisely what happened here:
Twitter Dialogue on 4/2/09:
- Tim: If you get to call opposing abortion being "pro-life" then I get to call opposing stem cell research being "pro-cancer."
- Josh: I'm not opposed to stem cell research. I only oppose the type of SCR that kills humans. The SCR types that work are awesome!
- Tim: I've lost a lot of people to cancer, but no one to stem cell research. Pretty clear cut when you think about it like that.
- Josh: Greetings! I've lost family members to cancer too, which is why I'm excited by the new iPS Cell breakthroughs. http://bit.ly/1umpvZ (Link to Dr. Oz telling Oprah and Michael J. Fox that iPS Cell technology will cure Parkinson’s, and not embryonic stem cells.)
- Tim: you seem nice but I'm a 27yr old bachelor living in San Diego, CA. I'm pro-choice to my grave. Cheers!
- Josh: Thanks! I'm open to changing my mind if I hear good arguments refuting my views. Are you also open-minded? We may find common ground.
- Tim: What works for me doesn't work for everyone, which is why I'm pro choice. Leave the decision to the people it affects.
- Josh: I'm pro-choice on a lot of issues, but some choices are wrong. Could we agree on that? Like, wrong no matter what the circumstances.
- Tim: NO. What could you possibly base a decision on if it isn't based on existing circumstances. Blind following is for fools.
- Josh: Well, take an obvious example: torturing toddlers for fun. Could we agree THAT would be morally wrong no matter what?
- Tim: Certainly not. Locking my brother in the closet and poking him with sticks when he was younger was just good, clean fun. Seriously though, I don't think the government or anyone else should make the 'decision in question' for anyone. Period.
- Josh: Nah, not talking about that. Real torture, just for fun. Is that wrong? I agree the government shouldn't get involved if the unborn are not human. If that can be proven, I don't care about abortion anymore.
- Tim: I see your point but again, THAT is also a decision to be made by affected parties, not me, not you, and not the government.
- Josh: What if I proposed legislation to take the government out of parents killing their toddlers. Would you support my legislation? Thanks for taking the time to chat, by the way!
- Tim: You're getting off topic. Toddlers and torture aren't the issue. No legislation should affect the 'choice in question.'
- Josh: My point is this: 1. Some choices are wrong. 2. IF the unborn are human LIKE the toddler, than killing them is wrong.
- Tim: My point is this: Your opinion should not affect everyone in the country, neither should mine. I respect your beliefs and encourage you to stick with what you believe. I believe otherwise. Have a nice evening.
- Josh: Ok. Glad we could find a little common ground. Have a great day, sir.
